Homeopathic Medicine (see also our FAQ on homeopathy)
Homeopathy, a therapeutic system of medicine developed by Samuel Hahnemann nearly 200 years ago in Germany, is perhaps the least understood of holistic therapies. It is a very sophisticated method of health care, requiring an enormous amount of knowledge, professional training, and experience, to provide homeopathic services.
The word "homeopathy" comes from the Greek words "homeo" (meaning "similar") and "pathy" (meaning "suffering" or disease"), and it is used to describe the "law of similars," similia similibus curentur - "let likes be cured by likes". Hahnemann discovered that a substance administered in large crude dosages to a healthy individual will produce specific symptoms, but when this same material has been reduced in size and administered in minute doses, it will stimulate the body's reactive process to relieve these same symptoms.
An example is Ipecacuanha (Ipecac). If taken in large quantities it produces vomiting; but taken in minute doses, it cures vomiting. Ipecac, when administered in minute homeopathic amounts, will even stop the gagging which frequently follows a coughing spell.
However, it is important to understand that homeopathic medicine does not treat symptoms or conditions - homeopathic physicians treat the whole person. An important principle of homeopathic medicine is individuality, which is not provided in conventional methods of treatment. People suffering from asthma, for example, will not receive identical treatment. Individuality is important because each person's unique experience of disease is the key to his or her health; a person's experience gives a homeopathic physician insight into their unique method of self-defense. It thus follows that symptoms are not the disease, symptoms are a reaction the body/mind/spirit produces to an external or internal stress. The homeopathic physician's goal is to stimulate a person's defense mechanism, which is as unique as one's personality, and to help develop resistance to their predispositions. As long as the problem has not progressed too far, the body can heal itself with a little help.
